Created and developed by Tomas Matejicek, Slax is a free portable GNU/Linux distro derived from Debian. It was originally derived from Slackware. It is light-weight, though frugal it supports persistence, and it can run from RAM. It is small, does not come with many pre-installed programs (it does have a web browser), and offers a large selection of software in the default repositories. The project was dormant as of 2009, but came back in 2012 with the release 7.0 release. It then went dormant again in 2013, and was revived in 2017; this revival marked the switch from Slackware as a base to Debian as a base.
